President Bola Tinubu is set to embark on a significant three-day state visit to France this Wednesday, following an official invitation from French President Emmanuel Macron.
The visit, which will focus on strengthening the bilateral ties between Nigeria and France, aims to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including agriculture, security, education, energy transition, and youth development.
Tinubu’s visit comes at a time when both nations are looking to expand their engagement in key areas of mutual interest. According to Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the Nigerian President, this diplomatic mission will focus on enhancing political, economic, and cultural relations, with a special emphasis on creating new opportunities for collaboration.
The visit is set to begin with ceremonial receptions at iconic French landmarks, including the Les Invalides military museum and the Palais de l’Élysée, where Tinubu and his wife, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, will be welcomed by President Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron. This will be followed by a series of high-level discussions aimed at fostering deeper diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
Key highlights of the visit include talks on enhancing skill development for Nigerian youth through exchange programs, with a focus on automation, entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership.
Both Tinubu and Macron are expected to discuss how France can support Nigeria in boosting youth competencies, which will be crucial for addressing the country's growing need for skilled labor in its evolving economy.
In addition to the youth-focused discussions, Tinubu and Macron will also hold talks on financial cooperation, trade, solid minerals, and investment, with the goal of expanding private sector involvement in Nigeria’s economic development. A key session will involve the France-Nigeria Business Council, which works to facilitate private sector partnerships in these areas.
Another important aspect of the visit will be the engagement of the First Ladies of both countries. Brigitte Macron and Nigeria’s First Lady will discuss initiatives aimed at empowering women and children, as well as supporting vulnerable groups.
One of the initiatives on the table is Nigeria’s ‘Renewed Hope’ program, which focuses on social welfare and gender equality.
The visit will conclude with a state dinner hosted by President Macron for President Tinubu and his delegation, before they return to Nigeria.
